Unifying European strategies

We create an evidence-based strategy to create resilience against wildfires

At FirEUrisk, we’re harmonizing and upgrading current European strategies by including the socio-economic circumstances that affect the occurrence of extreme wildfires as well as the biophysical conditions, such as vegetation and climate. This mix of perspectives allows a better understanding of how vulnerable communities are to wildfires and which are the best practices to adapt.

The three steps of FirEUrisk

From evaluation to mitigation, we look into risk from different perspectives

Assessment

We appraise the location, intensity, frequency and probability of fires. We evaluate fire danger and the exposure and vulnerability to fires in different areas, and the effects of fires on people, property, ecosystems and the environment.

Reduction

We study the drivers for human-caused fire ignitions, revise land management strategies to understand how they affect wildfire risk, and develop tools for predicting how extreme fires behave and spread.

Adaptation

We create scenarios of how changes in climate, population and land uses affect fire risk conditions. We aim to improve the prevention of and preparedness for fires, especially in areas where fires will become more regular in the future.

A joint effort to understand extreme wildfires

38 international partners for a multi-perspective strategy

Wildfires affect societies at large, which is why we want for the FirEUrisk solutions to be useful and available to as many people as possible. Our consortium brings together researchers, policy-makers, forest and fire managers, civil protection and weather services, companies and NGOs.

Adapting to different wildfire risk conditions

Testing our solutions in different European ecosystems

We test our approaches to wildfire risk management in five pilot sites across Europe. Covering a variety of wildfire risk conditions, these testing grounds address all phases of wildfire challenges: prevention, preparedness, response, and restoration. Each pilot site will hold an event to demonstrate the scalability and effectiveness of our strategies, engaging with and receiving feedback from the end-users of the FirEUrisk solutions.
